Monday February, 4 2013 @ 10:02:35 Nature: Field Fire Address: 27266 Buttercream Heights, Millsboro, DE 19966 Field Fire Results from Discarded Ashes or Coals On Monday, February 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for field fire in the vicinity of Buttercream Heights off of American Legion Road. Emergency response units included Brush #80-00 from the Oak Orchard facility and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility. Emergency response crews were assigned to mitigate and suppress to small field fire incident. It appears that the fire resulted from improper discarding of ashes and coals from the residential heating source. Indian River's Fire Prevention Committee Co-Chairperson Steven C. Deery, Jr. offers the following safety tips that should be considered when discarding fireplace ashes or coals. Safety Tip: Fireplaces & Fireplace Ashes When clearing ashes from the fireplace, be sure to put them into a metal container with a lid. Do not discard your ashes into any combustible container such as a paper or plastic bag, a cardboard box, or a plastic trash can. Keep your can outside the home, away from your fireplace or stove. Do not place ash containers on decks, porches, or in garages. Pour water into ash containers to make sure the ashes are cool. Just after 10 o’clock this morning, Indian River firefighters responded to a fire in a field near the Buttercream Heights development off of American Legion Road in Oak Orchard. Firefighters say the fire was started by ashes and coals from a home that weren’t properly disposed of. Firefighters say when cleaning ashes out of your fireplace, place them into a metal container with a lid. Ashes should never be put into paper or plastic bags, plastic trash cans or cardboard boxes. The metal container should be outside your house, away from stoves and fireplaces. Firefighters also recommend pouring water onto ashes to fully cool them off.
