Nature: Structure Fire

Location: 35261 6th St., Bay City, Millsboro, DE 19966

 

On Tuesday, October 6th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Lewes (82) fire companies were alerted for a residential structure on 6th Street in Bay City off of Long Neck Road.  It was reported to be a working alarm

Emergency response units from Indian River included Chief 80-15, Tanker 80, Rescue 80 and Brush 80-00 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics and the local emergency medical service providers.

Indian River’s Fire Chief arrived on location and advised of a working alarm with heavy smoke showing with fire from the rear and side of the structure. 

Emergency response crew assignments included activation of two fire suppression attack lines – one for initial fire suppression activities and one to protect nearby exposure concerns. Additional assignments included search of the home for occupants with negative results while other firefighters from Lewes and Millsboro were assigned to assist with gaining access to the void area between the two roofs and overhaul of the structure. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two and half hours.

One firefighter was transported to nearby medical facilities with heat exhaustion. No other civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The Delaware Stare Fire Police coordinated scene access for the duration of the incident.

Representatives from the American Red Cross were notified to provide assistance to the displaced residents which were identified as three adults and two young children.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin of the fire.
