Smoke Investigation Yeilds Vehicle Fire

On Wednesday, January 9th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a smoke investigation in the area between Harris Teeter and the American Legion Post #28.  The initial calls to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) identified a smoke condition in the area

Emergency response crews could identify clearly identify heavy black smoke in the wooded area on north side of John J. Williams Highway.  Deputy Chief Steven Hawkins arrived in the area and suspected a woods or brush behind the residential structures but located a fully involved car fire.

Emergency response units included Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-03 and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crews were required to initiate fire suppression activities as well as to prevent the spread to neighboring structures and wooded areas.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall is investigating.
