Nature: Water Rescue Priority 1 

Location: 32156 River Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Sunday, May 17th, the Indian River (80), Dagsboro (73), and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a water rescue incident involving two kayakers approximately 100 yards offshore and one kayaker has overturned.  Additional resources alerted included the Sussex County Paramedics, the local emergency medical services provider, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control – Marine Police, as well as the United States Coast Guard – Indian River Inlet Squadron (USCG).

Indian River’s Safety Officer was within the immediate vicinity and advised accordingly.  Immediately on-scene and reported that a visual contact was obtained and making an effort to access the private docks and/or piers.  One kayaker was accessing nearby piers and additional information would be forthcoming. 

After a few minutes and more evaluation, it was determined that both kayakers were able to access land and all emergency response units and apparatus were cancelled.  The DNREC Marine Police and USCG were advised accordingly.

Emergency response preparations included 80 Marine 1 and 80 Marine 2 units as well as Rescue 80 and other ancillary vehicles – Utility 80-11 and Brush 80-0.
