Thursday, July 19, 2012 Nature: Vehicle Fire Location: John J. Williams ITAO VFW Post On Thursday, July 19th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle fire on John J. Williams Highway in the area of the VFW Post and Bulls Eye Lane. It was reported to be a box truck type vehicle. Emergency response units were limited to Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility as per the direction of Chief Steven C. Deery, Jr. who responded directly to the scene. Emergency crew assignments were to take a defensive position on John J. Williams Highway and evaluate the truck based upon no visible fire. The operator of the truck was able to extinguish the fire in the battery compartment and requested additional evaluation. Efforts to disconnect the battery resulted in additional sparking and crews determined the situation melted the battery terminals. The operator of the truck made arrangements to have the vehicle towed. The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control measures for the duration of the incident. John J. Williams Highway was limited to one lane traffic flow while emergency response units were on scene.
