Story

On Monday, July 16th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company learned of a tragic death of a volunteer firefighter in the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company in Accomac County, Viginia.

On behalf of the Officers and Members of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and members of the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Company on the passing of their Chaplain and brother firefighter, David R. Chew Jr.

It is with sadness that we ask our communities to keep the Chew family and the Bloxom Volunteer Fire Department in their thoughts and prayers during these difficult times that the Bloxom community is experiencing.

Fallen Eastern Shore Firefighter Laid to Rest

PARKSLEY, Va. - The Virginia state flag flew at half-staff Friday as fallen firefighter David Chew was laid to rest in the Parksley Cemetery.

Chew answered his final emergency call on Monday, a call he had responded to for 11 years. Chew was the victim of a fatal fire truck crash.

Firefighters in the Bloxom Vol. Fire Co. told WBOC they still cannot believe Chew is gone.

"You never expect it. You never plan on it. You never want to hear it and you certainly don't want it to be one of your brothers," said Bloxom Deputy Fire Chief Sean Bagwell.

Firefighters from across Virginia, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and Delaware came together to honor Chew, who was known as a devoted family man, volunteer and pastor.

"We've lost an amazing, honorable man of God and a man that served his community," Maegan Smith said.
