On Friday, March 20th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and the local emergency service providers have been busy responding and assisting residents and mariners in distress.

Early in the morning, Indian River was alerted for a carbon monoxide detector in Stonewater Creek and later in the morning an automatic fire alarm (AFA) at Long United Methodist Church caused by workers.

For most of the afternoon, things were quiet until early evening, when Indian River was dispatched for a cardiac arrest episode in Oak Orchard.    Brush #80-0 responded from the Long Neck facility.

Then an unconscious / fainting episode near Long Neck which was upgraded to a cardiac arrest episode as well.

Then, Indian River (80), Dagsboro (73), Millsboro (83), and the local emergency medical service provider were alerted to for two kayakers in distress off of Pot Nets Bayside Beach.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Brush #80-0 with 80 Marine 2 and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility and Utility 80-8 and 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well the Delaware State Fire Police.  The Dagsboro (73) Fire Company did launch a marine unit and was responding.

Emergency response crew assignments included a marine unit response to assist with two kayakers that were in distress off Pot Nets Beach near Paradise Grill.  Indian River’s Incident Command responded to the beach area and established visual contact and provided guidance for responding units.  Indian River’s 80 Marine 2 unit (a rapid response vessel) launched and quickly accessed the kayakers offering assistance and transfer back to the nearby marina.  The local emergency medical services provider was requested for evaluation purposes.  80 Marine 1 arrived at the Marina launch area and was held pending additional directives.  The responding Dagsboro 73 Marine unit was cancelled while responding to the incident.

It was reported that two kayakers were off Pot Nets Bayside and become distressed.  One kayaker visual identified a mariner standing in the water and the other kayaker needing assistance.  80 Marine 2 rendered and secured both mariners and their vessels for transport to the dock area.  The mariners were evaluated by the local medical response personnel.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided assistance to mitigate golf carts and by-standers were appropriate.

All mariners were returned to the nearby marina facilities.

All units were returned to their respective stations.
