Saturday July, 7 2012 @ 23:10:38 Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS Address: 32250 Brandy Cir Harbeson, DE 19951 On Saturday evening, July 7th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway near the entrance to Brandywood. It was reported to be a serious motor vehicle collision with three (3) vehicles and possibly five or more patients. The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC)classified this incident as a Level I Mass Casualty Incident and requested emergency medical services from the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2), the Millsboro (83); Lewes (82) and Rehoboth Beach (86) as well as the local emergency medical service provider. Indian River’s Incident Command was coordinated by Steven R. Hawkins who identified that this accident involved two (2) vehicles and four occupants with one of the vehicle occupants gone on arrival. It was also clarified as not being a Level I Mass Casualty incident. It appears that a white Ford pick-up was traveling eastbound on John J. Williams Highway and sideswiping a silver Jeep that was traveling westbound for al unknown reason. The Jeep veered off the roadway striking telephone company box and utility pole. One occupant of the Jeep was trapped and required vehicle extrication. The Ford pick-up left the roadway surfaced and traveling into a nearby cow pasture. The occupant of the Ford pick-up fled the scene of the accident on foot. Emergency response units included Rescue 80 and Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Fire Police and the Delaware State Police. Emergence response crews were assigned to coordinate vehicle stabilization, where needed; assist with patient stabilization, where needed; commence with vehicle extrication measures on the Jeep; coordinate scene preservation measures; and provide traffic control assistance because John J. Williams Highway was entirely closed for the duration of the incident. Incident Command notified the Sussex County EOC the additional ambulances would not be needed and that the Aviation Unit would be utilized to search for the occupant of the Ford Pick-up. The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control assistance for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Police are investigating and search for the vehicle’s occupant.
