Saturday June, 30 2012 @ 13:57:22 Nature: Fire Prevention, Fire Truck Awareness, Fire Truck Rides Address: Cannon Road, Millsboro, DE 19966 On Saturday, June 30th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was invited to provide a demonstration for fire prevention, fire safety and fire truck rides at the New Life Bible Fellowship Church on Cannon Road in Millsboro, Delaware. Indian River’s Fire Prevention Committee coordinated a fire truck demonstration, discussion with question and answer process, as well as a recreational opportunity for a fire truck ride. The demonstration and discussion involved many topics that focused on fire prevention and fire safety as well as reviewing intent and purpose of the equipment on the fire engine. FIRE SAFETY FACTS Each year, more than 4,000 Americans die in fires, more than 25,000 are injured in fires, and more than 100 firefighters are killed while on duty. Eighty three percent (83%) of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residences. Many of these fires could have been prevented. Cooking is the third leading cause of fire deaths and the leading cause of injury among people ages 65 and older. In order to protect yourself, it is important to understand the basic characteristics of fire. • Fire is FAST. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames. • Fire is DARK. Fire produces gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Instead of being awakened by a fire, you may fall into a deeper sleep. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three- to- one ratio. • Fire is HOT. Heat and smoke from fire can be more dangerous than the flames. Inhaling the superhot air can sear your lungs. Identified herewith are various photographs of the event activities. |
