Second Day of Summer Brings Multiple Alarms On Friday, June 22nd, the second day of summer and the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for multiple incidents.
Friday June, 22 2012 @ 04:52:28 Nature: Automatic Fire Alarm Address: 33559 Windswept Dr., the Peninsula, Millsboro, DE 19966 At approximately 4:52 a.m., Indian River was alerted for an automatic fire alarm incident on Windswept Drive in the Peninsula off of Bay Farm Road. This incident resulted in Ladder 80 and Engine 80-3 responding under the direction of Duty Officer Steven R. Hawkins. The incident had audible and visible alarms present. Emergency response crews were assigned to investigate the interior conditions of the structure. All of the occupants of the structure vacated the building. The reason for the alarm was unfounded. The alarm systems were reset and incident was cleared.

Friday June, 22 2012 @ 20:51:46 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 26931 Flipper Road, Pot Nets Bayside, Millsboro, DE 19966 At approximately 8:46 p.m., Indian River was alerted for a structure fire on Flipper Road in the Pot Nets Bayside development off of Long Neck Road. Emergency response crews were assigned to coordinate an internal and exterior evaluation of the residential structure due to a smoke condition inside the residential location. The evaluation was assisted with thermal imaging cameras. Emergency response units include: Engine #80-1, Rescue 80, and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility. Engine #80-1 initiated two hand lines for fire suppression purposes, if needed. One hand line was within the interior of the structure while the second hand line was for exterior functions while undergoing evaluation in the crawl space was being coordinated. Indian River’s Duty Officer was Ryan Mock who coordinated the incident activities. After significant evaluation, it was determined to be an electrical issue within the crawl space of the residential location. Electrical Issue Blamed for Pot Nets Bayside Fire An electrical issue in a crawl space under a house in Pot Nets Bayside is being blamed for a fire Friday night. Firemen from Indian River got the call just before 9 p.m.; arriving units found smoke inside the home on Flipper Road. No word on any injuries.
Friday June, 22 2012 @ 22:07:27 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 34622 West Harbor Dr., White House Beach, Millsboro, DE 19966 The final alarm of the day was at approximately 10:07 p.m., during a torrential thunder and lightning storm. This incident was identified as the residential structure being struck by lightning causing concern. While emergency response units from Indian River was responding, the incident was upgraded to a working alarm with Millsboro (83), Lewes (82), Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Fire Marshall being alerted as well Emergency response crews included Engine #80-1 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility. Engine #80-3 immediately initiated a fire suppression line and quickly knocked down the fire. Other responding unit response was downgraded to just Indian River units and an interior and external evaluation of the residential was coordinated. The entire incident mitigation was during a hectic thunderstorm which appears to be the culprit of the incident with lightning striking the residential structure. This incident did require the homeowner being transported to local medical facilities for a medical condition. The Delaware State Fire Marshall is investigating. House in White House Beach Struck by Lightning A house on West Harbor Drive in White House Beach was struck by lightning Friday night. Indian River, Millsboro and Lewes firemen, as well as Sussex County Paramedics and the State Fire Marshal, were called to the house just after 10 p.m. |
