Initial Incident Alert - Vehicle Accident - Vehicle into Commercial Structure

On Thursday evening, June 21st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Long Neck Road in the vicinity of the Sandbar. It was reported to be a vehicle into a commercial structure.

Indian River’s incident response included: Incident Command and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility. Indian River’s Duty Officer was Steven R. Hawkins.

An initial incident summary was provided by a responding fire police officer who identified a single vehicle into a commercial structure as reported with significant structure damage to the building and no occupant entrapment.

While traveling to the incident location on Long Neck Road, the Incident Command apparatus approached a two vehicle collision in the vicinity of Leisure Point, notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations of such, and directed Engine #80-5 to coordinate mitigation efforts for the vehicle accident at this second location.

All other emergency response units continued to respond to the initial incident in the area of Sandbar Village.

Duty Officer Hawkins arrived on-scene and requested the following actions via Emergency Operations Center and other incoming apparatus:

(1) To alert the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team (SCTRT) for a commercial incident involving a vehicle into the structure with partial collapse and structural integrity concerns.  See SCTRT website http://www.scvfa.net/sctrt.cfm      for additional information about SCTRT;

(2) To alert the Sussex County Building Inspectors of potential concerns;  and

(3) To identify the appropriateness of notifying the Alcohol, Tobacco & Firemen (ATF) Agents due to the commercial entity being a liquor store. See Delaware ATF website  http://date.delaware.gov/dabcpublic/index.jsp   for additional information about Delaware ATF .;  ;

Other emergency response assignments included:

(1) Rescue 80 was assigned to initially stabilize the access points to the commercial structure with 4x4s and strut supports;

(2) To coordinate vehicle stabilization efforts;

(3) To coordinate rear access to the structure and evaluate the interior of the structure and disconnect the utilities;

(4) To coordinate perimeter and scene access from other interest parties while the structure integrity concerns were being addressed; and

(5) To prepare for the technical rescue team assignments.

Engine #80-5 was required to activate a fire suppression hand-line in case of emergency need with the various structural tasks being completed.

Additional resources were requested and included the Delaware State Fire Police, the Delaware State Police, the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team #1; the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team #2; the Sussex County Paramedics; and the State of Delaware ATF Agents.

It appears that the operator of the Jeep was attempting to park and his foot slipped off of the brake pedal, striking the gas pedal, and allowing the Jeep to lurch forward into the storefront.

There were individuals transported to nearby medical facilities for additional observations; however, there were no emergency responder injuries.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

UPDATED: MD man cited after driving jeep into building on Long Neck Road

UPDATED – 9:30pm:  State Police say a Maryland man was parking his Jeep in front of Cove Liquors on Long Neck Road just after 7pm when his foot slipped off the brake pedal – causing him to hit the gas and lurch forward into the front of the store.  Police say there were no injuries and 59 Edward Pasternack of Halethorpe, MD was cited for careless driving.  Police say there is an unknown amount of structural damage to the business.

Indian River emergency crews were called for a vehicle into a building.  Witnesses tell WGMD a jeep drove through the front of Cove Liquors on Long Neck Road.   The incident occurred just after 7pm
