Nature: Vehicle Accident
Location: Captains Grant (80)
Oak Orchard Rd and Captains Millsboro, DE 19966
On Wednesday, February 26th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Oak Orchard Road in the vicinity of Captains Grant. It was reported to be a single vehicle accident into a wooded area.
Indian River’s Captain Deery was traveling in the area and arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle off the roadway into the trees with an occupant trapped inside and classified a priority one (critical) situation.
The emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard area as well as Engine #80-1 and Command 80 from the Long Neck area as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization and preparation for vehicle extrication, traffic control, as well as fluid and debris recovery. Both units were utilized for vehicle extrication in order to access and free the occupant of the vehicle. Emergency responders were tasked with gaining access via driver’s door and performing a dash-roll scenario to free the occupant.
It appears that a KIA mini van was traveling south on Oak Orchard Road and crossed over the opposite traffic into a wooded area alongside the roadway causing significant front-end damage to the vehicle making impracticable for the occupant to exit the vehicle. The occupant of the vehicle was tended to by the Sussex County Paramedic and the local emergency medical service provider.
The Delaware State Fire Police were requested to close this segment of Oak Orchard Road for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
