Nature: Junior Member Training Initiatives

Location: Station #1 – Oak Orchard Road

During the past few days in May, Indian River’s junior firefighter volunteers have underwent specialized hands-on training for vehicle rescue and extrication techniques; self-contained breathing apparatus donning measures and activities; hose handling awareness and training; as well as search and rescue awareness techniques and training.

The training procedures concentrated on “getting acquainted with tools and familiarization of various tactics and strategies” to become a better volunteer firefighter.

These hands-on training episodes have been coordinated by other fire line officers and membership personalities.

These trainings are a continual effort to enhance our services that we provide to our fire district.

These instructional agenda items are intended to review the basics based upon designed skill sets for Junior Firefighters. These activities included:

1)  Information and techniques for donning and wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus in a controlled environment;

2)  Information and techniques for hose handling;

3)  Information and techniques regarding search and research assignments;

4)  Overview, information and hands-on experience with basic firefighting strategies.

These events were coordinated via Training Officer Ryan Mock, Membership Chairperson Joseph Thompson; Trey Mumford, Billie Jo Casapulla, and Hayden Klingler.

Other training activities specifically for junior members may be obtained by viewing the following website:
