Nature: Vehicle Accident

On Thursday morning, April 5th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a personal injury vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway and Johnson Lane east of Millsboro. It was reported to be a serious vehicle collision involving a school bus.

Other emergency response entities included: Sussex County Paramedics, Delaware State Police Aviation Units and Ground Units, Delaware State Fire Police, Delaware Department of Transportation, DVFA Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team, and representatives of the Indian River School District.

It appears that the school bus was traveling east and stopped on John J. Williams Highway and a red Chevrolet sedan collided with the school bus causing significant damage to the sedan.

Indian River's emergency response services were required to coordinate the following activities:  assist with patient stabilization and evaluation measures, perform vehicle stabilization and extrication measures; retain fluid and debris recovery measures, ensure traffic control and scene preservation measures, remove  the vehicle from underneath the school bus and coordinate media relation activities.

Indian River’s emergency response included:  Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility.  Rescue 80 was assigned to coordinate vehicle extrication activities and utilized the following equipment:  cribbing for vehicle stabilization and lifting; hydraulic Hurst tools for extrication and cutting measures; inflatable airbags for lifting; and electric wench for pulling activities.  Engine #80-5 was assigned to coordinate vehicle extrication activities and utilized the following equipment:  cribbing for vehicle stabilization and hydraulic Hurst tools for extrication and cutting measures. 

This was an extended extrication purposes due to the complexities of the incident. 

The Sussex County Paramedics coordinated the various the school bus emergency operational procedures with respect to the children that were on the school bus.

There were additional school representatives present for the children. The Delaware State Fire Police and the Delaware Department of Transportation were coordinating the traffic control measures associated with the closure of John J. Williams Highway. The Delaware State Police Fatal Accident Reconstruction Team was present to conduct an investigation and the Delaware State Medical Examiner has been requested.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company will be offering services to the family of the deceased.

BREAKING: Fatal Accident in Millsboro Involving School Bus

8 a.m.: Delaware State Police are currently investigating a personal injury crash involving an occupied school bus and a car that occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m. this morning east of Millsboro. Preliminary reports indicate there is one adult fatality in the car.

All children and the driver were safely removed from the bus. As a result of the crash southbound Route 24 is closed from Williams Street Road to Warwick Road.

Commuters are asked to avoid the area and find alternate means of travel.

The investigation into the crash is in its early stages.

7:45 a.m.: Delaware State Police have now confirmed an accident between a car and school bus in Millsboro at Warwick and Gull Point Roads.

Details are slowly coming in but we know that a car hit the back of the bus and went underneath the bus.

We also know that one child was taken to the hospital; EMS personnel are still working to extricate the driver of the car.

7:20 a.m.: Police and EMS personnel are on the scene of a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 24 and East State Street in Millsboro; the crash happened just after 7 a.m.

Witnesses tell WGMD, the accident involves a small car and school bus; WGMD has not confirmed that with police.

We’re also hearing that at least one patient will be taken to the hospital and that the children have been taken off the bus into a nearby house.

Fatal Crash Involving School Bus in Sussex County

OAK ORCHARD, Del. --  Delaware State Police are investigating an accident involving a school bus in Sussex County.

Police say the crash happened on route 24 near Bulls Eye Rd., roughly 2 miles east of Millsboro around 7 o'clock Thursday morning.

Troopers say there was one fatality from the car.  The Indian River School District tells WBOC the bus was headed to Long Neck Elementary School in Millsboro.  Officials say three students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say southbound Route 24 is closed from Williams Street Road to Warwick Rd. in Sussex County.
