Nature: Structure Fire

Address: 34377 Beach Plum Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

Early Friday morning, March 16th, the Indian River, Lewes and Millsboro fire companies were alerted for a structure fire on Beach Plum Road in the Pot Nets Bayside development off of Long Neck Road. It was reported to be a fire of  unknown origin with hearing an explosion and could identify fire at or near the rear of the residential structure.

The Incident Command was coordinated by Chief Steven C. Deery, Jr. responding directly to the incident and was able to determine that a fire existed in an attached carport garage area involving small propane grill type equipment with fire damage to the rear of the carport shed type attachment. The initial "active" fire was knocked down by an unknown person with a fire extinguisher.

The nature of the incident appears to be associated with a propane grill type equipment contributing to the heat melting or burning into an adjacent garden hose that was turned on; thereby, prohibiting much of the fire spread. However, the fire did cause damage to the exterior of the carport structure and extended into the ceiling / roof area.

Emergency response crews were required to check for extensions, ventilate, and evaluate the interior structure for heat levels, as well as to evaluate the interior walls of the shed and roofing areas for heat and evidence of fire. Thermal imaging cameras were utilized to evaluate some of the areas. The interior walls of the shed did suffer impact associated with the fire, water, and fire extinguisher residue.

Chief Deery downgraded the incident response to Indian River crews and returned all other responding fire companies back to their first due fire districts.

Emergency response apparatus included: Engines #80-3 and #80-5 from the Long Neck facility as well as Engine #80-1 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Millsboro fire company apparatus, Lewes fire department apparatus, the Delaware State Fire Police, the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office.

There were no injuries, firefighter or civilian, associated with this incident.

The occupants of the structure were permitted to occupy the structure.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Fire In Pot Nets Bayside Damages Carport

The Delaware State Fire Marshal will today try to determine what sparked this morning’s fire at a home in Pot Nets Bayside.

Firemen were called to the home on Beach Plum Road just after 3 a.m. for reports of a blaze in an attached carport garage.

Firemen on the scene say the blaze appears to have involved a small propane grill-type equipment. A garden hose left on prohibited the fire from spreading, although damage was done to the carport’s exterior structure as well as ceiling and roof areas.

No one was injured in the blaze.
