“Red Flags - Firefighter Survival - Recognize & Survive”

Presented by: Chief Mike Lombardo, Buffalo Fire Department

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hosted its regular monthly training at the Main Station facility in Oak Orchard and was able to attract a renowned presenter and speaker to present the “Red Flags Keeping Firefighters Safe on the Fireground.”

This presentation is designated to assist firefighters and officers identify and stay out of dangerous or hazardous situations that could be life threatening or result in firefighter injury. Using actual incidents, videos, photographs, Line of Duty Death (LODD) incidents, this presentation was designed how to identify, interpret, and rectify red flags that confront firefighters every day on the fire ground. With lessons learned in LODD’s and Near Miss events, firefighters and officers will depart with the tools and enhanced awarenress necessary to keep themselves and those under their command safe.

Mike Lombardo is a 34-year veteran of the fire service and was the Commissioner /Chief of Department of the Buffalo Fire Department from Jan 2006 to Jan 2010. He is a New York State fire instructor and was a member of the development team for New York State firefighter survival and rapid intervention programs.

Mike has been an editorial advisor for Fire Engineering magazine, a member of the Advisory Board for FDIC and lead instructor for FDIC live fire training. He is a two time Firehouse Magazine Heroism Award recipient (1988 and 1994) and the recipient of the FDIC 1999 Training Achievement Award. He is an instructor on fire tactics, live fire attack, firefighter survival, and command throughout the United States.

Mike's presentation was informative, instructional, and insightful for those members and guest from other companies that attended.  Mike's interaction with the audience as well as video and audio interface was phonomenal. 

Mike’s closing remarks was that “…we shall never forgot our fallen firefighters…” and was highlighted with LODD video in memory of.

Mike currently is a member of the Christiana (Stations 3, 6, & 12) and Rehoboth Beach (Station 86) fire departments.
