On Thursday evening, October 31st, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), Dagsboro (73) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a water rescue incident off Pot Nets Bayside Beach. It was reported that a pontoon boat with one occupant was in distress during some windy and rough water conditions.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Utility 80-8 with 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility, Brush #80-0 with 80 Marine 2 and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional response alerted included the Sussex County Paramedics and the local emergency medical services provider.
Emergency response crews responded to the Pot Nets Bayside ramps in order to launch and better access this incident. 80 Marine 2 was underway, and 80 Marine 1 was held at the ramp. The Dagsboro Marine unit was underway from the opposite side of the bay.
Upon approach to the vessel, it was determined that a mariner was fishing and did not need assistance. This call was marked up as good intent because the reporting party observed what they believed was a mariner in distress.
All units were returned to their respective stations.
