Wednesday December, 28 2011 @ 15:40:58 Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS Address: 31600 - 31791 Indian Mission R Millsboro, DE 19966 On Wednesday afternoon, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit as well as Life Net 2 Aviation Unit were alerted for a vehicle accident reported serious with patient entrapment. It appears that a maroon Ford Mustang convertible was traveling south on Indian Mission Road approaching John J. Williams Highway and left the roadway for an unknown reason striking numerous trees and overturning. The vehicle occupants were trapped and identified as significant priority medical conditions. Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-5 from our Long Neck facility and Rescue 80 from our Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Emergency response personnel were requested to coordinate a rapid extrication measures due to the severity of the injuries. Other crews were assigned to assist with patient stabilization and packaging, vehicle stabilization, scene and perimeter security, traffic control and detour measures, as well establish landing zones for the incoming aviation units which included the Delaware State Police Trooper 2 Aviation and Life Net 2 Aviation. Additional Sussex County Paramedic units were requested as well. The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the closure of Indian Mission Road between John J. Williams Highway and Friendship Road for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Fatal Accident Investigation Team was requested to the conduct an additional evaluation of the incident. Both occupants were transferred to nearby medical institutions via ground transportation due to the nature of the injuries. Delaware State Police say just before 4 p.m., the Lewes woman was driving southbound on Indian Mission Road approaching Route 24 when her Ford Mustang drifted into a roadside ditch, hit a tree, then overturned and hit another tree. The, as of yet unidentified, woman was extricated from the car and taken to Beebe Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:50 pm. Police say the driver’s 64-year-old daughter sustained serious injuries in the crash, and was airlifted to Christiana Hospital. The names of the women won’t be released until relatives are notified. Police say both women were wearing their seat belts, and alcohol isn’t being considered a factor in the crash. =============================================== UPDATED 5:40 PM: Indian River Fire crews have cleared the scene of the rollover accident on Indian Mission Road in Long Neck. However, Delaware State Police are still on the scene conducting their investigation, as well as the Fire Police, who are directing traffic through the area. The accident happened just after 4:30 this afternoon when a Ford Mustang went off the road, hit some trees and then rolled over. The driver and the passenger in that car had to be extricated, and have been taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Drivers on Route 24 through Long Neck can expect delays near the intersection of Route 24, Long Neck and Indian Mission Roads. Indian Mission Road is still closed between Route 24 and Friendship Road. ================================================ ORIGINAL STORY: Delaware State Police and Indian River firefighters are on the scene of a serious accident on Indian Mission Road, just off Route 24 in Long Neck. The Indian River Fire Company says that two people have been seriously injured when their Mustang convertible went off the road, hit some trees, and then overturned. The driver and the passenger had to extricated from the car, and have been taken to a nearby hospital. State Police are investigating the accident, so be prepared for delays on Route 24 near Indian Mission Road. Indian Mission road is currently closed between Route 24 and Friendship Road.
