A Reflection Back In Time…
Back in 1980s, various members of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company dreamed of an American Legion Post in the Oak Orchard/Riverdale area. The fire company authorized these members to utilize the facilities to host meetings to entertain discussions to formulate such an objective.
In January 1983, Don Addor and 13 other area residents signed a temporary charter giving them authority to form the Oak Orchard/Riverdale American Legion Post #28. These signing patrons include fire company members: Don Addor; Gordon Edwards; and Henry Warrington.
The initial Charters Members of the American Legion Post #28 included the following veterans that were associated with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company as well: Don Addor; Lawrence W. DuHudaway, Sr.; Gordon H. Edwards; Melvin J. Gede; George N. Nabb; Andrew Schrock; Winfield S. Walls, Sr.; and Henry C. Warrington.
Over the years, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company has partnered on numerous community endeavors to enhance the quality of life in the Oak Orchard/Riverdale and Long Neck communities. These entities have collaborated on such initiatives as the Oak Orchard/Riverdale Boys & Girls Club; Oak Orchard/Riverdale Fall Festival; and many other community service entities.
Today, the American Legion Post #28 is among the largest Post within the United States. Additional information may be obtained by viewing the following web page:
