Nature: Water Rescue Priority - Cold Exposure

Incident Location: Rehoboth Bay

Address: 34666 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, 19966

On Sunday morning, November 6th, the Indian River, Bethany Beach and Rehoboth Beach fire companies were alerted for a water rescue priority in the Rehoboth Bay near Bay City was the original dispatch location.

Immeidately prior to this alert notification, the Sussex County Paramedics and the local emergnecy medical service provider were requested to respond to Bay City for a cold exposure incident.

Emergency response units from Indian River responded to Bay City and Massey’s Landing for potential launching.  Indian River launched three vessels from the aforementioned marinas and Bethany Beach launched their vessel from the Indian River Inlet marina.

This dispatch was at the request of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aviation Unit that located an area of concern in the Rehoboth Bay and activated an emergency flare device to alert responding vessels in the Rehoboth Bay areas.

Responding units could quickly identify the location due to hovering aviation unit and flare devices in the northern section of the Rehoboth Bay. Emergency response units were able to locate, secure and transport the potential missing kayaker to a designated location for an additional evaluation by appropriate emergency response personnel.

The Sussex County Paramedics as well as the local emergency medical service provider were re-directed from the Bay City location to the Massey’s Landing location for additional assignments. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control Marine Police units were notified to respond to the Massey’s Landing location.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit was nearby to assist with aviation efforts when needed.
