Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: Indian Mission Rd and Friendship Road, Millsboro, DE 19966

 

On Thursday afternoon, August 15, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Indian Mission Road in the vicinity of Friendship Road.  It was initially reported by Sussex County Paramedics that happened upon the incident involving three vehicles with a priority one patient in one vehicle and heavy entrapment in another vehicle.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility, Chief 80-15 from within the district as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Additional services from the Delaware Department of Transportation, the Delaware State Police – Aviation Unit (Trooper 2), and the Sussex County Paramedics were also utilized.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization, traffic control, vehicle extrication, fluid and debris recovery, landing zone, and incident mitigation activities.

It appears that a Subaru SUV was traveling south on Indian Mission Road and collided with a Ford Explorer that was traveling north on Indian Mission Road.  The Explorer was also tapped from behind by an Audi SUV.  The Subaru and Ford collided head-on.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close Indian Mission Road between Friendship Road and Stonewater Creek for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit landed nearby to transport one patient while the other patient was transported by ground units with the assistance of the local emergency medical services provider.

The Delaware Department of Transportation were called to assist with the extended nature of the roadway closure.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

79-year-old man in critical condition after Millsboro accident

A 79-year-old Millsboro man is listed in critical condition following an accident Thursday in Millsboro.

From Delaware State Police:

Millsboro- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a serious crash that occurred earlier today.

The incident occurred on August 15, 2019 at approximately 12:44 p.m., when a 2019 Subaru Ascent was traveling southbound on Indian Mission Road (SR 5) just north of  John J. Williams Highway ( SR 24).  A 2000 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound on SR 5 approaching the Subaru. A 2011 Audi Q5 was traveling northbound behind the Explorer. For unknown reasons, the operator of the Subaru allowed his vehicle to cross the center line and enter the northbound travel lane in front of the Explorer. The operator of the Explorer attempted to swerve his vehicle to the right to avoid the impact but was unsuccessful. As a result, the Subaru struck the Explorer.  The front of the Audi then struck the rear of the Explorer within the northbound travel lane.

The operator of the Subaru, a 66-year-old male of Millsboro, DE was properly restrained.  He was transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was treated and released with minor non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the Explorer, a 79-year-old male of Rehoboth Beach was not properly restrained and was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The operator of the Audi, a 58-year-old female of Millsboro, DE was properly restrained and declined medical treatment at the scene.

SR 5 was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
