Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS

On Wednesday morning, October 19th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident located on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Layton Davis Road. It was reported to be a single vehicle striking a utility pole, the vehicle is overturned with occupant entrapment.
It appears that a white Buick sedan was traveling on John J. Williams Highway and lost control for an unknown reason, striking a utility pole and overturning in an adjacent field. The occupant of the vehicle was trapped and needed significant extrication measures for removal from the vehicle.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company emergency response units were apprised of the incident synopsis with confirmed occupant entrapment and a potential Priority One Response required from the local utility provider – Delmarva Power. The Delaware State Police Aviation units were downed due to weather and the Sussex County Paramedics were on scene.
Indian River emergency response units included Engine #80-5 and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility. All units were required to initiate vehicle stabilization, monitor the overhead utility wire concerns, evaluate the condition of the snapped utility pole, assist with occupant stabilization and prepare for vehicle extrication measures. The Delmarva Power Priority Response would be approximately 40 minutes estimated time of arrival (ETA). It was reported that vehicle extrication measures were completed at 9:41 a.m. with an approximate 32 minute extrication process.
The extrication measures required vehicle stabilization, removal of all occupant doors and windows.
The Delaware State Fire Police were required to detour traffic for the duration of this incident and the Delaware State Police are investigating.
