Saturday October, 8 2011 Nature: Training Evolutions – Basic Skills, Structural & RIT Team Evolutions Address: Halyard Street, Pot Nets Bayside, Millsboro, DE On Saturday, October 8th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company coordinated various training evolutions to enhance firefighter knowledge, skills and abilities which included basic firefighter skills, structural firefighter skills and rapid intervention team (RIT) skills. The basic firefighter skills were conducted in preparation for new firefighters to attend the basic firefighting course at the Delaware State Fire School later in the month. These instructional objectives included: firefighter awareness items, firefighter personal protective gear acclimation, firefighter tool and equipment awareness, basic principles for forcible entry measures, full firefighter gear assignments with interior residential tasks, and many other items. The structural firefighter skills included: ladder evolutions, ventilation evolutions, firefighter situational awareness, search & rescue topics, firefighter survival skills, and various interior tasks and assignments. The rapid intervention skills included: simulated mayday assignments and tasks included firefighter trapped and entangled scenarios, firefighter unconscious scenarios, roof or floor collapse scenario and many other objectives. The instructual objectives were to familiarization the firefighter with the following concerns: understanding the need for a rapid intervention team; to effectively organize personnel and equipment for a RIT; to conduct size-up and safety measures in advance; to encounter a simulated MAYDAY call; to function as a team-member in difficult situations; to utilize a tag-line and various techniques to locate and remove a impacted firefighter and to recognize and overcome a variety of self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) related emergencies. The intent of these curricula assignments are to fine tune and hone on various knowledge, skills and abilities in order to better prepared in times of need. This training exercise was made possible with the collaboration and participation of Tunnell Companies by donating vacant residential properties that would be demolished in the future.
