Saturday October, 1 2011 @ 10:59:20 Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS Address: 31500 - 31577 Oak Orchard Rd Millsboro, DE 19966 On Saturday morning, October 1st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a pedestrian injury vehicle accident on Oak Orchard Road in the vicinity of the Boys & Girls Club of Oak Orchard/Riverdale. Additional emergency response notification included the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2); the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police. Indian River’s First Assistant Chief Hayden Klingler was on scene and identified that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle and additional medical services were needed. Indian River emergency response was limited to Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility. Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility was cancelled while enroute as was the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit. It appears that a maroon Chrysler New Yorker was traveling south on Oak Orchard Road when a young male subject entered the roadway before colliding with the vehicle. The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control measures for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Police are investigating. Troopers say that just before 11 o’clock Saturday morning, 80-year-old Gloria Altemose of Millsboro was driving her car down Oak Orchard Road when she hit a 4-year-old boy who was trying to cross the road. The boy is being treated for minor injuries at Beebe Hospital. DSP News Release: Juvenile Injured in Accident Location: Oak Orchard Road north of Oak Meadow Drive, Millsboro, DE Date of Occurrence: Saturday, October 01, 2011 at 10:55 a.m. Operators/Vehicles: -Operator 1: Gloria M. Altemose, 80, Millsboro, DE -Vehicle #1: 1992 Chrysler 5th Avenue Injured: -Caleb Smith, 4, Blades, DE Resume: Millsboro, DE- A four year old juvenile was injured after being struck by a vehicle late this morning in Millsboro, DE. The accident occurred at approximately 10:55 a.m. this morning as Gloria Altemose, 80, was operating a 1992 Chrysler 5th Avenue and was traveling southbound on Oak Orchard Road north of Oak Meadow Drive, in Millsboro. The front of Altemose’s vehicle then struck Caleb Smith, 4, who was attempting to cross Oak Orchard Road in a westbound direction. Caleb Smith was transported from the scene by EMS to the Beebe Hospital where he is being treated for non life threatening injuries. Gloria Altemose, who stopped her vehicle at the scene, was not injured. This crash remains under investigation at this time. UPDATED 11:45 A.M: Delaware State Police tell WGMD that the accident on Oak Orchard Road was a vehicle hitting a pedestrian. A medevac helicopter had been called, but that request has been cancelled. The exact extent of the pedestrian’s injuries is unknown at this time. ORIGINAL STORY Drivers in Oak Orchard should be on the lookout for emergency vehicles. The Indian River Fire Company is on the scene of an accident on Oak Orchard Road between Elizabeth Street and Delaware Avenue, not far from the Indian River Bay. The accident happened just before 11 o’clock. No other information is available at this time.
