Nature: Structure Fire
Address: 23813 - 23899 Elmwood Av E Lewes, DE 19958
On Friday afternoon, September 16th, the Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Indian River volunteer fire companies were alerted for a working structure fire in the development of Angola By The Bay (ABTB) on Elmwood Avenue. It was reported to be a garage fire with exposure concerns to the residential structure, boats, other adjacent property and debris. It was stated via the Rehoboth Beach Emergency Operations Center that the information reported was that the occupant was attempting to start a motorcycle which backfired and ignited the incident.
Crews from Rehoboth, Lewes and Indian River were assigned to initiate fire suppression attack lines to protect the residential structure, extinguish the garage that was fully involved and substantially gone, and protect exposure concerns. Other crews were assigned to establish a water hydrant with the hydrant down the street as well as initiate additional attack lines from the initiate engines. As the manpower resources grew, additional crews were called for residential ventilation, checking for interior extensions via the thermal imaging camera, water supply and hydrant operations, etc.
Rehoboth Beach’s initial crew did a significant knock-down and was able to preserve all of the residential structure with minimal damage.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
