Safe Kids Day - Lowe’s in Lewes, Delaware
Saturday, June 8, 2019
(LEWES, Del.) - A worldwide organization that teaches safety to kids and their parents is well-represented in Sussex County and first responders from multiple agencies joined them by bringing their teaching tools to Lowe's in Lewes for demonstration.
Safe Kids Day exhibitors educate children and their parents on gun, fire, and pedestrian safety, as well as fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire. Hands-on learners can practice CPR on mannikins and practice animal safety at a petting zoo. Meanwhile a bounce house, obstacle course, and games were available just for fun.
Safe Kids Sussex County Coordinator Cheryl Hopple says one of their most important lessons shows what happens when kids are left in a hot car. "We have a thermometer in the car to remind parents about leaving kids in cars, which is so unfortunate. Last year there were 52 children who died from being left in a hot car and this year we have already 8," says Hopple.
Even though this is the 11th Safe Kids Day to take place in the Lowe's parking lot, Hopple says the event has taken place in Sussex County for much longer.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was among the entities that has participated with this event for the last few years and believes that this event is a significant initiative to promote fire safety and fire prevention.
Indian River estimates that approximately 606 people attended their booth to review the exhibits and hands-on displays.
