Story
Wednesday August, 24 2011 @ 20:59:05 Nature: Vehicle Accident BLS Address: 30518 - 30737 Phillips Branch ON SHARP CURVE NEAR ABANDON HS Harbeson, DE 19951 While operating at an earlier motorcycle collision on John J. Williams Highway, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a second alarm which involved an additional vehicle accident where the car was reported on fire. Initial reports identified a potential hazardous situation with utility wires down. Bowers Beach Fire Chief Phil Pennington provided additional information to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center that this incident on Phillips Branch Road was the result of a single car vehicle accident and the car was on fire. It appears that the occupant of the vehicle was not present at the incident location any longer. It appears that a black Volkswagen sedan was traveling east on Phillips Branch Road and failed to navigate the curve, striking a tree and catching on fire. Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck Station; Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard Station as well as Rescue 80 and Engine #80-5 from a previous vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway. Incident Command was assumed by Ryan Mock who immediately verified that the vehicle was unoccupied and ordered fire suppression crews to utilize a 1¾” fire suppression attack line with foam to mitigation the incident. Other crew members were required to gain access to the vehicles compartments to fully evaluate the vehicle’s content and to fully suppression any fire. The Delaware State Fire Police were required to close Phillips Branch Road between Indian Mission and Holly Lake roads for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Police are investigating. Additional information may be obtained via the following websites: (1) WGMD Radio 92.7 Radio - http://www.wgmd.com/?p=33021 Indian River Fire Co on scene of 2 crashes – one is detouring Route 24 traffic at Gull Point Rd August 24, 2011 @ 8:45pm: Indian River Fire crews and Mid-Sussex Rescue are on the scene of two crashes in the Oak Orchard and Long Neck areas. One crash is detouring traffic in both directions on Route 24 between Gull Point and Warwick Roads. That is reported to be a single vehicle crash. Just after the first crash was reported Indian River Fire crews were called to a single vehicle crash on Phillips Branch Road in the curve where a reported car overturned and was on fire. Phillips Branch Road is closed between Route 5/Indian Mission Road and Holly Lake Road until fire crews put out the fire and remove the car from the scene. There is no word on injuries in either crash. WGMD will have more information as it becomes available.
