Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Medics

Location: 30740 Mount Joy Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Tuesday evening, April 30th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Mount Joy Road in the area of Baylis Avenue and Sharkey’s Drive.  It was reported to be single vehicle striking a utility pole with wires down.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Command 80 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-1 and #80-3 as well as Brush 80-0 from the Long Neck facility.  The Delaware State Fire Police, the Delaware State Police, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Millsboro EMS Units and the local EMS provider also provided a response.

Incident Command 80 arrived and identified that a utility pole was snapped and wires down with transformers hanging as well as heavy vehicle entrapment with additional occupant ejections.

Emergency response crew assignments were to prepare and initiate extended vehicle extrication measures for occupant that was heavily entrapped, as well as assisting with rapid extrication measures for the partial ejected occupant and assistance with patient stabilization for the fully ejected occupant.  Additional measures were directed for vehicle stabilization, traffic control and complete roadway closure, redirecting responding apparatus for scene assess from both sides of the roadway, notification of utility provider information, as well as fire suppression line advancement for potential issues.  Identification and segregation of emergency hazards while the incident was being mitigated.

It appears that a black Ford Fiesta ST was traveling on Mount Joy Road at an apparent high rate of speed and lost control for an unknown reason striking a utility pole and overturning.  The vehicle’s integrity was severely compromised during the collision.  In all three priority patients were transported to nearby medical facilities for additional medical attention.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative was notified for the utility pole replacement.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
