Story
Wednesday July, 6 2011 @ 15:09:20 Nature: Building Fire Location: Mountaire Farms Address: 29046 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966 On Wednesday afternoon, July 6th, the Millsboro (Station #83) and Indian River (Station #80) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a building fire at Mountaire Farms on John J. Williams Highway. It was reported to have a building involved with fire and heavy smoke. The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (SCEOC) notified responding emergency apparatus that this was a potential hazardous material incident because the building was known to be occupied with pesticides, chlorine and propane. Emergency response units from Indian River could clearly see the residual effects of the incident upon departing the Main Station on Oak Orchard Road with heavy black smoke visible. Millsboro’s Fire Chief Matt Warrington coordinated the incident response and was advised by the SCEOC that the following units would be making a response: Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office; Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control Officers and Representatives; Sussex County Paramedic Decontamination Unit; and Sussex County Paramedics. Indian River was able to respond with the following resources for the incident: Ladder 80 & Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engine #80-3 & Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility. Ladder 80 was utilized to operate a master stream and Tanker 80 and Tanker 83 were beneficial for a water supply resource. Chief Warrington requested the SCEOC to obtain cover up/stand-by assistance for Indian River and Millsboro fire companies from Georgetown Fire Company (Station #77) and Lewes Fire Department (Station #82). The incident operations included a fire suppression activity, decontamination activity, rehabilitation activity, water supply operations and apparatus staging operation. Traffic patterns were altered on the complex for the duration of the incident. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
