Woman Killed in Rehoboth Bay Boating Accident

Delaware marine police and state troopers spent Sunday evening investigating the state’s first boating fatality of the year.

Sgt. Gregory Rhodes, DNREC spokesman, says a woman was killed after her personal water craft collided with another on the Rehoboth Bay.

The incident was reported to authorities around 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Three people involved had been on the bay with Sea Doo personal water craft, which are similar to Jet-Skis.

One source says a 31-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries with extensive blood loss and a broken neck during the accident.

A pontoon boat was used to take her to the end of Bay Shore Lane in the Rehoboth Shores trailer park around 4:45 p.m. That is where a county paramedic pronounced her dead. DNREC marine police and state troopers examined the water craft at the dock before hauling away the Sea Doos for further investigation.

Sgt. Rhodes says the victim’s name and more details will be released once the next of kin has been notified. He added that two people were killed in 2010 during boating accidents in Delaware.

12:03 PM, May. 31, 2011 - Written by Terri Sanginiti

A 31-year-old Millsboro woman was killed Sunday afternoon when her personal watercraft collided with another one operated by her boyfriend's son, authorities said today.

It is the first boating fatality in the state this year. The victim, identified as Min L. McManus, was in the Rehoboth Bay on her Sea-Doo personal watercraft along with her boyfriend and his son near Herring Creek when the crash occurred.

Sgt. Gregory Rhodes, of the state Division of Fish and Wildlife, said Brandon C. Bennett, also of Millsboro, was the operator of the personal watercraft that crashed into her. Officials earlier had reported he was her stepson but later clarified that information.

State marine police were in the area prior to the collision.

McManus was brought ashore and was pronounced dead of her injuries by Sussex County paramedics.

Her body was turned over to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

Both watercraft were seized by the state Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement as part of the death investigation.

“The son was inconsolable at the accident scene,” Rhodes said.

The investigation is continuing.
