On Friday, May 20, 2011, members of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company attended the Lancaster County FIRE EXPO in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to evaluate and review various firefighting apparatus, equipment, gear and peripheral in order to remain knowledgeable with current technologies, trends, etc.
Illustrated below is a brief synopsis of the FIRE EXPO beginnings:
(1) Information obtained from http://www.lcfa.com
Lancaster County's FIRE EXPO evolved from a Fire Equipment Show hosted by LCFA at Park City Shopping Center on October 28 1973. In 1974 the LCFA joined with other area Fire Associations to host the Middle Atlantic State Fire Protection Seminar at Manheim Twp Middle School on September 6, 7, 8, 1974 at which time the name FIRE EXPO '74 appeared. In 1975, FIRE EXPO '75 was held at Dutch Wonderland Park on Route 30 East of Lancaster City on May 16, 17, 18, 1975. More than 6,000 attended from 21 states. FIRE EXPO continued to increase in size and in 1990 FIRE EXPO moved to the Pennsylvania Farm Show complex in Harrisburg, PA where it continues to this day and draws over 20,000 participants in recent years.
While in Harrisburg, the members of Indian River had the opportunity to visit with brother and sister firefighters from Coaling, Alabama that were attending their first FIRE EXPO event. As you may recall, Indian River and Coaling become acquainted during the sale of a previous command unit. These acquaintances have foster friendships among the two companies. An exceptional opportunity to discuss fire service, families, sports, communities we enjoyed by all. Indian River continues to pledge a cadre of members and friends to attend an upcoming University of Alabama game!
