Burton, Sr., Charter Member, Board of Director, President and President Emeritus of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company passed away on Monday, April 18th, 2011. Leon served as Board of Director and President of the fire company for 6 years during the 1955 thru 1963 time periods when our organization was in its infancy and developmental stages. Leon was awarded the President Emeritus position in December, 1998 for his outstanding dedication, insight and forethought to encourage the development and continuity of a community fire company. Leon will be missed by fellow firefighters, ladies auxiliary members of our organization, members of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, as well as his family and friends. Leon owned and operated a septic business with his son in the local area for many years. He was also a founding member and the first president of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Alice Burton and a grandson, Brian. Leon is survived by is wife of 63 years, Margaret; a son, Leon Jr., and his wife Bonnie; and a grandson, Bret, a brother Fred, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 21 at 2 pm at MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 1 pm. Interment will be in St. George's Episcopal Chapel Cemetery, near Angola.
