Congressional Fire Service Institute (CFSI) On Thursday, April 7, 2011, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company afforded some of its membership the opportunity to attend the Congressional Fire Service Institute (CFSI) and the 23rd National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner and Seminars in Washington, DC.

This extraordinary opportunity for fire service leaders to engage Congressional leaders and United States Government Administration officials in discussions about federal programs and legislation addressing the needs of local first responders is unprecendented.

Throughout the two-day event, CFSI hosted a series of seminars addressing issues that directly relate to the safety of first responders. These events were held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

This was the fire services' day in Washington. CFIS encouraged participants to schedule meetings with their members of Congress to exchange information and share ideas on how the federal government can address the challenges of the fire services, both nationally and locally.

The Delaware attendees were able to speak with United States Senators Thomas R. Carper and Chris Coons as well as United States Congressman John Carney. Delaware's Governor Jack Markell was in Washington for attendance to the CFSI event as well.

The Delaware volunteer fire service was represented by at least 200 people from Delaware.
