Wednesday March, 30 2011 @ 19:00 Training Seminar: Renewable Energy Systems & Firefighter Safety On Wednesday evening, March 30th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company held a “Renewable Energy Systems Training" which included a Firefighter Safety component for dealing with renewable energy technology. The seminar was conducted by a certified instructor from the Delaware State Fire School and included general firefighter safety information as well as renewable energy technology, installation techniques for renewable energy, and industry best practices that are ever changing in the rapid technological environment. The course was intended to summarize the following objectives: • Identifying and describing the three types of renewable electric energy tie-ins (i.e., grid-tied; off grid; and grid-tied islanding.); • Identifying and describing the various system components; • Identifying and describing the solar electric wiring systems; • Identifying and describing the disconnects & safety mechanisms in place to aid firefighter safety; and • Identifying and describing: o Small wind turbines; and o Back-Up Generators; This training seminar was attended by approximately 37 volunteer firefighters. Much of the presentation information was a collaborative effort between the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) and Flexera of Harbeson, Delaware.
