Thursday December, 16 2010 @ 11:40:20 Nature: Carbon Monoxide Detector Activation Address: 28300 Elizabeth St Millsboro, DE 19966 On Thursday, December 16th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for carbon monoxide (CO) detector activation. Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility responded to the incident as well as our the local emergency medical service provider. An immediate internal evaluation of the residential structure produced significant odors of diesel fuel, gas detector and gas meter readings. The cause of the incident was determined to be in appropriate usage of diesel fuel for residential heating purposes via the furnace within the residential structure. In this situation the carbon monoxide detector or CO detector activation was appropriate based upon the source. Elevated levels of CO can be dangerous to humans depending on the amount present and length of exposure. The occupant of the residential structure declined additional services from the local medical facilities.
