Heavy, drifting snow to hit early Sunday THE NEWS JOURNAL • DECEMBER 25, 2010 The first potential blizzard of the winter season is working its way toward Delaware, with forecasters issuing stern warnings of heavy drifting snow, wind gusts up to 40 mph and travel conditions that will be “hazardous or impossible.” Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) spokeswoman Rosanne Pack says residents should consider traveling this evening or very early Sunday morning in advance of the snow. A winter storm warning now is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday with snow accumulations of 8-12 inches expected. The snow is expected to begin Sunday morning and end by dawn Monday, with the greatest intensity from noon Sunday until midnight. The weather service said travel will become hazardous due to significant accumulations of snow, with blowing and drifting snow expected with greatly reduced visibilities at times. The forecast is for northerly winds increasing to 20 to 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph. “This will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” the service said in a statement.
