Monday September, 6 2010 @ 18:23:06 Nature: Water Rescue Priority Address: 38747 - 38767 Rehoboth Bay - Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 Early Monday evening of September 6th, the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a priority water rescue incident in the Rehoboth Bay and requested the assistance of Indian River and Lewes volunteer fire departments, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, the United States Coast Guard, DNREC – Marine Police and other emergency response units. It was reported to a have numerous vessel occupants overboard and the vessel circling out of control in the Rehoboth Bay near West Bay Park. It was determined by responding ground emergency response units that four (4) persons were overboard and attempting to gain access to the shoreline while the vessel precariously circles in the water with no occupants on-board. Indian River marine units were directed to launch via Massey’s Landing Boat Ramp and head towards the incident location in the Rehoboth Bay. 80 Marine 2 was the first vessel to access the incident location via the waterway and observed the unoccupied vessel that was full-throttle and attempting to ground itself. 80 Marine 2 was able to gain sufficient access to distressed vessel and discontinue the power supply to the vessel causing the motor to cease operations. DNREC Marine Police Officers were coordinating the investigation of the incident and the US Coast Guard waited for the 80 Marine 2 Unit Officer to make landline contact. It was reported that four (4) persons were overboard with two (2) persons seeking additional medical observations at nearby medical institutions. The incident is pending further evaluation and investigations by appropriate authorities. Members of the Indian River Fire Company marine unit were able to cut the motor on the vessel. Of the four people who were in the water – 2 were taken for medical treatment. The incident remains under investigation.
