Story
Sunday June, 20 2010 @ 18:59:15 Nature: Interfacillity/Palliative-ALS Location: Renaissance Nursing and Rehab Address: 26002 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966 On Sunday evening, June 20th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to provide medical and manpower assistance on John J. Williams Highway at the Renaissance Nursing Home with respect to ameliorating a bariatric situation that needed transportation to a nearby medical facility. Unlike the previous instance when various supplies and materials were needed to manufacture a ramp to accommodate a bariatric situation or provide lifting assistance. The local emergency medical service provider underwent various investigative procedures to identify, locate and requisition a private service provider to adequately address the bariatric situation at hand. However, these private entity resources had to respond from an extended distance (approximately travel time in excess of 1 hour) that held the local fire company resources (Indian River and Bethany Beach) active and committed until such arrival and loading transpired. The Bethany Beach Fire Department was requested to provide assistance with the situation based upon the specialized equipment (bariatric medical stretcher) that would accommodate the issue; however, the emergency response personnel on-scene cancelled Bethany Beach upon arrival of the private entity service provider. The patient was loaded and transported to nearby medical facilities for further observations. The incident was placed under control with stipulations that further analysis from state and local governmental review entities being requested to ameliorate the inability to adequately obtain the required and necessary resources (equipment) to address this bariatric situation in the Sussex County region. Upon arrival at the nearby medical facility, the Lewes Fire Department was alerted to provide similar services to address the unloading procedures with respect to this overall situation. You may review the April 25th incident to identify the efforts of the local emergency medical service provider evaluated to expedite the loading and transport assignment after being alerted by the corporate entity that transportation services would be needed. The estimated personnel costs (18 members @ Federal Emergency Management Wage Rate plus social security costs) and equipment response costs (flat billing rate as determined by FEMA) for this medical assistance incident was estimated to be $1,290.70 for the incident. The incident response was eighteen (18) members for 1 hr. and 45 minutes in-service and does not include the resources of the Sussex County Paramedics, the Bethany Beach and Lewes fire companies as well as the local emergency services provider.
