Nature: Traffic/Transportation Acdnt ALS
Address: 26145 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966
On Thursday afternoon, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for personal injury vehicle collision on John J. Williams Highway (Route #24) near the intersection of Bay Farm Road with possible occupant entrapment and reportedly five patients.
Indian River’s Officer in Charge – Jason M. Faulkner, Sr. listened to the reports via the local emergency medical services provider and requested that the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center upgrade the incident to a Level I Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) and solicited medical transport assistance from Lewes Fire Department (Station #82); Millsboro Fire Company (Station #83); and Rehoboth Beach Fire Company (Station #86); as well as the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – (Trooper #2).
It appears that a silver Chevrolet Tahoe traveling westbound struck a purple Dodge Neon that was departing from nearby residential properties by entering John J. Williams Highway in the path of the Tahoe. The Neon was hit at or near center “B” post and occupant compartments thereby causing entrapment.
Immediately upon arrival of Engine #80-5, Faulkner requested vehicle stabilization and efforts to prepare for door removals as well as a roof removal in order to gain better access to the occupants of the vehicle. An additional extrication measure, called a dash roll, was required to free the entangled occupant of the vehicle. Emergency response crews from Engine #80-3 and Rescue #80 were required to provide assistance with various extrication efforts being performed.
The ground transportation units transported one occupant to the nearby medical facilities while the Trooper #2 Aviation unit flew one occupant to Christiana Medical Center near Wilmington, Delaware. All other occupants of the vehicles were regarded a patient refusals.
The Delaware State Fire Police closed John J. Williams Highway between Long Neck Road and Bay Farm Road for the durations of the incident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
