On Sunday morning, April 25th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to provide medical and manpower assistance on John J. Williams Highway at the Renaissance Nursing Home (Fenwick Room) with respect to ameliorating a bariatric situation that needed transportation to a nearby medical facility. Immediately upon dispatching, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center apprised our Chief Steven C. Deery, Jr. of the situation and that various supplies and materials would be needed to manufacture a ramp to accommodate a bariatric situation or provide lifting assistance.
The Bethany Beach Fire Department was requested to provide assistance with the situation based upon the specialized equipment (medical stretcher) that would accommodate the issue; however, the emergency response personnel had been on-scene for a substantial amount of time before alerting the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.
The incident response personnel from Indian River decided to construct a transport ramp with 4x4s, plywood, cribbing and other supplies to permit quick and easy access to the box portion of the ambulance without encountering any manpower lifting exercises. This ramp was designed, developed and constructed on-scene to provide the resolution desired.
The patient was loaded and transported to nearby medical facilities for further observations.
The estimated personnel costs (23 members @ Federal Emergency Management Wage Rate plus social security costs) and equipment response costs (flat billing rate as determined by FEMA) for these medical assistance incidents are estimated to be $704.33 for the incident. The incident response was twenty-three (23) members for 50 minutes in-service and does not include the resources of the Sussex County Paramedics, the Bethany Beach and Lewes fire companies as well as the local emergency services provider. Also, omitted from the documentation and formula estimations are the lumber and cribbing costs.
