On Wednesday, April 14th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for two automatic fire alarm incidents at Long Neck Elementary School. The initial incident was at 5:18 a.m., while enroute to an earlier incident located in Pot Nets Seaside, Engine #80-1 was diverted to the Long Neck Elementary School to evaluate the concern.
Upon arrival, emergency response personnel were immediately able to identify an audible alarm and utilized various Knox Box Technologies to gain access to the facility. While inside the school location, an evaluation of the enunciator panel indicated a concern with an obvious odor of smoke was identified in or near the Library. A thermal imaging camera was utilized to locate electrical ballast that was suspect in the incident. All emergency response units were released from the facility at approximately 6:10 a.m. and the building was turned over to the school custodial staff.
At approximately 7:44 a.m., the Indian River, Millsboro and Lewes fire companies were dispatched for another automatic alarm incident just to the commencement of the school day. While inside the school location, an evaluation of the enunciator panel indicated a concern with an obvious odor of smoke in the facility. All emergency response units and school personnel were requested to assist with traffic control with respect to incoming school buses. It was determined to a malfunctioning electrical component.
Emergency response assignments were limited to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, the Delaware State Fire Police, the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office and various responders of the Indian River School District.
