Saturday April, 10 2010 @ 00:05:55 Nature: Traffic/Transportation Acdnt ALS Location: Mariners Cove Address: 26399 Cove Dr Millsboro, DE 19966 Early Saturday morning, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, the Sussex County Paramedics, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit were alerted for a personal injury vehicle collision on Long Neck Road in the vicinity of Mariner’s Cove apparently adjacent to the Fairfield development. The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center notified the responding emergency service units that it was reported to have a single vehicle collision with possibly two occupants trapped inside the vehicle. Indian River’s Duty Officer – Eric Ruckle was notified of the reported severity of the collision with multiple occupants trapped. Duty Officer Ruckle requested the status of additional aviation units. Upon arrival of the Duty Officer, it was confirmed to have a single vehicle with two occupants trapped; one occupant would require extensive extrication measures. Engine #80-5 was ordered to access the scene via the northbound lane of Long Neck Road and prepare for multiple extrications with one door pop and the other would require complete roof removal as well as initial scene lighting measures. Rescue #80 was ordered to assist the emergency response crews with vehicle stabilization, extrication and patient stabilization measures. After extrication, it was determined that a single Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling north on Long Neck Road approaching the developments of Mariner’s Cove and Fairfield. The vehicle apparently left the roadway for an undetermined reason and struck a group of trees causing the vehicle to spin into the roadway. Both occupants of the vehicle required substantial emergency response attention with one occupant receiving priority injuries and would be transported via the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper #2) to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center in New Castle County. The Delaware State Fire Police were required to provide scene security, traffic control measures during the closure of the Long Neck Road and monitor the crowd from becoming hazards with the landing zone or other operational areas. The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident for additional details.
