Nature: Structure Fire
Address: 24165 Creek View Dr., Millsboro, DE 19966
On Friday, December 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a structure fire on Creek View Drive, Bay Hollow Estates just off Banks Road. The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center reported a smoky condition within the entire residential structure.
Duty Officer Eric Ruckle responded as did Engine #80-1 and Engine #80-3, all remaining apparatus was returned to the fire stations. Duty Officer Ruckle arrived on scene and reported a multiple story residential structure with nothing showing from the exterior. Engine #80-1’s emergency response crew was ordered to evaluate the interior of the residential structure.
It was immediately determined to be filled with a heavy smoke condition and smelled of an electrical condition. The occupant of the residential location identified that a baseboard heating unit malfunctioned and caught fire. The quick thinking occupant utilized a fire extinguisher and water to extinguish the flames.
The residential structure was ventilated to remove the smoke conditions and Deputy Chief Brian Hubbs evaluated the smoke detector conditions within the residential structure and determined no working smoke detectors due to outdated and old batteries. The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company provided replacement batteries.
