Tuesday September, 29 2009 @ 19:54:12 Nature: Residential Structure Fire Address: 34451 Bookhammer Landing Rd Lewes, DE 19958 At approximately 7:54 p.m., the Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Indian River Volunteer fire companies were alerted for a residential structural fire located at 34451 Bookhammer Landing Road in the vicinity of Camp Arrowhead Road, Lewes, Delaware. Initial arriving emergency response units, identified a heavy fire and smoke condition being present at the incident location. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation to ascertain the origin of the fire. It was determined that the household pets had perished in the incident and that there was working smoke detectors at the time of the incident; however, the occupants of the residential structure were not at home. No people were at home when the blaze started. Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Randall W. Lee reported the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department, assisted by the Lewes and Indian River fire departments, responded to the scene. Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire coming from the structure. A neighbor said she alerted firefighters there were dogs in the house, and although they attempted to locate and rescue them, the firefighters were unsuccessful. The home was equipped with working smoke detectors. Damages were estimated at $250,000. Fire investigators determined the fire originated in the west end of the dwelling, but the cause is still under investigation, said Lee.
