Nature: Structure Fire

On Saturday evening, May 23rd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire (Station #80); Millsboro Volunteer Fire (Station #83); and Lewes Fire (Station #82) companies were alerted for a residential structure fire on Wynikako Avenue near the vicinity of North Street in the development of Riverdale. Immediately after dispatch, our Duty Officer – Hayden Klingler, Second Assistant Chief responded directly to the area of the incident. Duty Officer Klingler reported that the location of the incident was Chippewa Avenue and North Street in Riverdale and not Wynikako & North avenues. Klingler also identified that a light smoke condition was being emitted from the residential structure.
Engine #80-1 responded directly to the incident and immediately engaged two 1¾” fire suppression lines to address the situation. Tanker 80 was the next due emergency response and was assigned to provide water supply for the incident. The remaining responding apparatus from Indian River and Millsboro were assigned to assist with extinguishment, ventilation, incident rehab for emergency responders, scene preservation, and with minor overhaul of the incident.
The Delaware State Police were on-scene immediately and assisted with traffic control and initiate an evaluation of the incident. The Office of the State Fire Marshal was notified to conduct an investigation of the incident in order to identify the origin and cause of the incident.
The Delaware State Fire Police were assigned to coordinate and restrict travel patterns on Chippewa Street and North Avenue for the duration of the incident.
The estimated personnel costs (34 members @ Delaware Minimum Wage Rate plus social security costs) and equipment response costs (flat billing rate as determined by FEMA) for this residential structure fire incident are estimated to be $2,983.05. The incident response was thirty-four (34) members from Indian River for 2 hours and 41 minutes in-service.
