Problem: Residential Structure Fire
On Tuesday, April 14, 2009, the Indian River, Millsboro, and Lewes fire companies were alerted for a reported residential structure fire on Layton Davis Road. The Milton and Rehoboth fire companies were alerted to provided stand-by coverage for Indian River during the incident.
While emergency apparatus were enroute, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center advised Chief Deery that it was a working alarm with the possibility of subjects trapped inside the residential dwelling. Upon arrival, Chief Deery apprised all responding apparatus and personnel that a heavy smoke and fire condition was prevalent and ccordinated the fire suppression tactical response as well as initiating residential search assignments.
Firefighters from Indian River made an aggressive interior attack, which quickly stopped the advancement of the fire. Firefighters from Millsboro were assigned to conduct a primary search of the residential structure which yielded no persons being located. It was later determined that the occupant had escaped the blaze prior to fire department arrival. It took firefighters approximately one hour to bring the situation under control.
Firefighters from the Milton Fire Department were upgraded and brought to the scene for additional assistance, while the Rehoboth Beach continued with the initial stand-by assignment.
The extinguishment of the residential structure fire was hampered by large quantities of debris immediately surrounding the access routes to and surrounding the dwelling.
There was one minor firefighter injury that was treated on scene. This incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office.
