Story
Saturday April, 11 2009 @ 10:11:06 Nature: Structure Fire Address: 26763 Chatham Lane, Fairfield, Millsboro, DE 19966 On Saturday morning, April 11, 2009, the Indian River, Lewes, and Millsboro fire companies were alerted for a reported structure fire at 26763 Chatham Lane in the Fairfield Development off Long Neck Road. While units were responding to the incident, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center received additional information identifying smoke conditions showing from the second and third floors of the residential address. Fairfield is a private residential community with multiple story townhomes. It is believed that this incident occurred as the result of inattentive cooking where a grease substance ignited while being heated on the kitchen stove and caught the kitchen cabinetry on fire. The residential sprinkler systems were activated which immediately assisted with the extinguishment of the fire. An alert neighbor notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center prior to the residential fire alarm activation. Engine #80-3 and responding other units were initially assigned to coordinate the extinguishment and ascertain extensions. The residential facility sustained significant water damage throughout the structure and minimal fire damage. The American Red Cross has been notified to assist with the housing accommodations for the displaced residential occupants. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
