On January 20, 2009, Delaware volunteer firefighters and ladies auxiliary members had the privilege to participate in the 2009 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade honoring President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (Vice President Biden is a President Emeritus of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association.)
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company had thirteen (13) volunteers make their way to Washington, D.C. to participate in this historic event and take part in the inauguration parade ceremonies. The Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association (DVFA) organized the event with the Presidential Inauguration Committee to allow Delaware volunteer firefighters and ladies auxiliaries to march in the 56th Inauguration Parade. This was the first appearance of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association in any Presidential Inauguration Parade.
The Citizens' Hose Company Band provided the theme song during the march and approximately four hundred (400) members from various Delaware volunteer companies braved the extreme cold and wind to participate in the once in a lifetime event. DVFA President Warren Jones led our volunteers who proudly showed their colors, paraded in their respective company dress uniforms and displayed their respective company flags along the nearly 4-mile route through the Nation’s Capital. Photos illustrating this historic event from initial parade practice through Secret Service security clearance procedures at the Pentagon to the Presidential Reviewing Stand are illustrated and various stories are shared on the following web pages:
