On Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at 5:15 p.m., within five hours and one mile of an earlier accident on John J. Williams Highway, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an extremely serious motor vehicle collision near the American Legion Post #28. A volunteer firefighter noticed that traffic on State Route #24 was extremely slow and not moving in the eastbound lanes of John J. Williams Highway approaching Legion Road. Immediately after a brief evaluation of the traffic situation, it was quickly identified that two vehicles had collided head-on at this location. It was reported via portable radio communication devices, that multiple Priority 1 patients and three vehicle occupants requiring vehicle extrication and approximately two occupant ejections existed at this incident location. Upon arrival of Chief Steven Deery, it was determined a two-vehicle, head on collision occurred. After an assessment of the scene, Chief Deery advised the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center that several subjects trapped and declared a Level One Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). Additional resources from the Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, the Millsboro Fire Company, the Lewes Fire Company, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, the Maryland State Police Aviation Unit, and the LifeNet Christiana Care Aviation Unit were immediately dispatched to the incident location. Two patients were flown to various trauma centers via the aviation units and the remaining patients were transported to various medical facilities via ground units. It appears that one eastbound vehicle and one westbound vehicle collided head-on. The incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
