On Saturday morning October 27, 2007 at approximately 11:17 a.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a traffic accident on John J. Williams Highway at Gull Point Road. It was reported as a single vehicle collision involving a utility pole with the occupant of the vehicle being trapped inside the vehicle.
The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center reported to responding apparatus that patient entrapment and extensive vehicle extrication would be required.
It appears that a single vehicle was traveling on State Route #24 (John J. Williams Highway) and was approaching Gull Point Road and for some unknown reason apparently loss control of the vehicle and collided with a utility people. Responding emergency apparatus arrived on scene to discover the situation as reported and immediately prepared for an extensive vehicle extrication including vehicle and patient stabilization, and initiated vehicle extrication that included but not limited to roof and door removal.
The occupant of the vehicle was transported to nearby emergency medical facilities. The incident responders included Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, Georgetown Fire Company, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, Delaware State Fire Police, Delaware State Police, and the Delaware Department of Transportation.
John J. Williams Highway was closed for most the day Saturday in conjunction with replacement of the utility pole and related wirings. The Delaware State Police are continuing their accident investigation.
